altruism

September 28, 2006

I did this entry for a little challenge running over 2 months at the Danish 3D community 3dmaxer.dk with the strange and contradictory theme "Surreal Reality".

"altruism" has a slightly painted surrealistic touch to it. It depicts reality in a surrealistic and symbolic way and has deep message flowing through it as well. I'll let it be up to the individual spectator what he/she feels the message and theme is.

Width: 1600 pixels

Rendering times ended up being about 7-8 hours for all layers at a native resolution of 2868x1200 pixels. There is somewhere about 40.000 characters in the frame, which for the most part are rendered on 2D alpha planes distributed by particle systems (similar to 2-dimensional cardboard cutouts). The foremost 40 characters are full 3D and are all posed separately.

The image is post-processed and composited in Photoshop. The background with the mountains is a matte painting digitally hand painted by me, and the sky is an image retouched and hand painted upon to and add more volumetric feel and details to the clouds.

I'm very grateful for all the critique and comments I got on various sites I posted this on. It helped greatly through the various iterations the piece went through. Thank you all very much!
