Tree of Life

August 1, 2007

After searching for what seems to have been forever, our heroes finally find the Tree of Life. The Tree shines golden and green in the setting sun, contrasting its unpleasant surroundings of sharp metal and rusted bolts all forming a corrupted version of what was once nature.

"Tree of Life" was my entry for the Blender World Cup 2007 with not just one, but four themes/criteria to make the entry fit within. Era: Distant Future, Location: Nature, State: Discovery, Influence: Religion. This wasn't simple to work out at first, but turned out to be a fun challenge. In the voting this entry was voted as no. 1.

I worked hard for a month to complete this in time for the deadline because it was a rather complex image involving many elements. For instance, creating the thousands of trees making up the metal jungle pushed me to the limit of my (and my computer's) capability.

The piece is very much open to personal interpretation. I've left a few clues backing up the way I interpret it, but who says my way is the right way? I'm sure much much more than I've thought of can be interpreted from it. So I'll leave the deeper symbolic aspects of the piece up to the spectator to figure out, rather than thoroughly describing everything.

I hope you like the result! As always, there are things that could have been better, but I had to finish it in time for the deadline. Big thanks to everyone who supported me during the process. It would never have been half as good without your comments and critique to push me along the way!
